Circulation

To obtain a library card you must: (1) be 18 years of age or older; (2) be a resident of the State of Texas; (3) present an acceptable picture ID; and (4) present proof of your current address. If you are under 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian apply for you. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for items checked out by a minor. To apply for a card you will need one of the following proofs of residency:

Acceptable Photo ID


 
  • Driver's license, temporary Texas driver's license or learner's permit (with additional photo ID)
  • Texas Department of Public Safety ID
  • Passport
  • Resident Alien Registration Card

Acceptable Proof of Current Address in Your Name


  • Driver's license, temporary Texas Driver's license or learner's permit

  • Texas Department of Public Safety ID

  • Personalized check, savings passbook, bank or credit union statement

  • Utility deposit receipt or utility bill

  • Current credit card bill

  • Voter's registration or notarized temporary voter's registration permit

  • Vehicle registration or liability insurance

  • Official rent receipt; rental agreement, contract or lease

  • Mail postmarked within the last 30 days (if none of the above is available)

To apply for a library card you will need to fill out an application and present it to library staff at the circulation desk of any Brownsville Public Library System location. You will also need to present your acceptable photo I.D. and proof of your current address. By receiving a library card, you agree to all the rules and fees of the Library System as well as any issued by the City of Brownsville. Rules may be subject to change without prior notice.

Adult Application


To obtain a library card as an adult you must: (1) be 18 years of age or older and (2) a resident of the State of Texas.
You will need to present: (1) a picture ID (Drivers License, State ID Card, etc.) and (2) proof of your current address when you submit your application. Click the link at the bottom of this page to download the Adult Application.

Child Application


If you are under 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian apply for you. They must meet the above requirements and come with you to the library you file your library card application. FEE SCHEDULE:


Overdue Book: $.10 per book per day
Audiovisuals: $1.00 per video per day
Lost or Damaged Library Card: $1.00

Item Checkout:


You may check out up to 7 items at one time. Books from the “New Book” collection may be checked out for 14 days. All other circulating books are available for 28 days. Videos must be checked out by adults only. Videos may be checked out for 3 days. No renewals on videos.

 

User Account Access:


You may access your library account information anytime online via the Library's web site. You must log in with your PIN number (personal identification Number), assigned when you first apply for a library card. This PIN will grant you access to special functions wihtin the library's web page as well as allow you to check out books at the self-check station. Be sure to memorize this number or keep it in a safe place. Do not give this number to anyone!

NOTES:
(1) Initial Library Cards are free for those who live in the State of Texas. (2) There is a $1.00 charge to replace a lost card. (3) Winter residents may obtain a card by showing proof of local address as well as main residence. (4) Brownsville Public Library System cardholders, who have had their Brownsville Public Library Card for at least 2 months, and are in good standing are eligible to apply for a TexShare card and borrow materials at participating libraries across the State of Texas.
